Can You Get Taller as an Adult? An Honest Height Maxxing Guide
Once your growth plates have closed, which for most men happens by the late teens or early twenties, your bone length is set and you will not get meaningfully taller through stretching, supplements or exercise. What you can change is how tall you look. Better posture can recover height you are losing to slouching, the right shoes and clothes add visual inches, and a fit, proportioned build reads as bigger. Height maxxing works when it means presenting your height well. It fails when it means chasing pills, hormones or hacks that promise growth.
Why adult height is fixed
Your long bones, like the femur and tibia, grow from areas of cartilage near their ends called growth plates. During childhood and puberty, these plates keep producing new bone, which is how you get taller. Toward the end of puberty, hormones cause the plates to harden and fuse with the rest of the bone. After that, those bones cannot grow longer.
For most males, growth plates close sometime in the mid-to-late teens, and growth has usually finished by around the early twenties, though timing varies from person to person. A doctor can confirm whether your plates are still open with an X-ray, usually of the hand and wrist. If you are an adult and not sure whether you have stopped growing, that is the only reliable way to know.
Genetics are the biggest factor in final height. Nutrition, sleep and general health during childhood and adolescence matter too, which is why average heights in many countries rose as nutrition improved. But once the plates are fused, none of those levers can add length to your bones.
What doesn't work
Stretching and hanging. Hanging from a bar or doing stretching routines can decompress your spine a little and help posture, but it does not lengthen bone. Any "gain" you measure right after is temporary.
Height supplements. Pills marketed to "increase height" in adults do not have good evidence behind them and are not regulated the way medicines are. They cannot reopen growth plates.
Growth hormone and other hormones. Human growth hormone is a prescription medicine for specific medical conditions, and it does not make adults with closed growth plates taller. Using it without a medical reason carries real risks, including joint pain, fluid retention and effects on blood sugar. Buying hormones online is a gamble with your health.
"Height exercises" and special diets. Basketball, swimming or certain foods do not lengthen adult bones. Good nutrition supports overall health, which is worth it on its own, but it will not add inches.
Stand at your full height
The fastest real change is posture. Many people lose noticeable height to slouching, forward head posture and rounded shoulders, especially if they sit at a desk or on their phone for hours.
You also measure slightly taller in the morning than at night, because the discs in your spine compress a little over the day. That is normal and goes back overnight.
To stand taller day to day:
- Strengthen your upper back with rows, face pulls and pull-ups
- Work your core so you are not collapsing through your lower back
- Stretch your chest and hip flexors if you sit a lot
- Keep your head stacked over your shoulders instead of jutting forward
- Raise screens to eye level
None of this makes your bones longer. It just means you are using all the height you have, and you look more confident doing it.
Shoes that add height
Footwear is the most direct way to add height in practice.
Boots and sneakers with thicker soles naturally add an inch or more. Chelsea boots, chunky sneakers and work boots are all easy, everyday options.
Height insoles and lifts sit inside the shoe and add extra height. They work best in high-top sneakers or boots so the lift is not visible. Start small, around half an inch to an inch, since bigger lifts change how you walk and can be uncomfortable.
Elevator shoes have the lift built in. They have improved a lot, but quality varies and some look obvious. If you go this route, choose a style that looks like a normal shoe.
Be aware that big lifts can affect your balance and gait, and wearing them all day can cause foot or knee discomfort for some people.
Clothes that make you look taller
Proportions matter more than raw inches. These help:
- Fit is everything. Baggy, oversized clothes swallow a frame. Clothes that fit your shoulders and taper slightly at the waist make you look longer and leaner.
- Tonal or monochrome outfits. Similar colors from top to bottom create one long line instead of cutting you in half.
- Shorter jackets and shirts. Tops that end at or slightly below the waist make your legs look longer.
- Slim or straight trousers with little or no break. Excess fabric pooling at the ankles visually shortens the leg.
- Vertical details. Open jackets, V-necks and vertical patterns draw the eye up and down.
- Avoid heavy horizontal breaks. Big contrasting belts and very long untucked shirts can visually shorten you.
Build a frame that looks bigger
How tall you look is not just about height. A fit, proportioned build reads as more imposing at any height.
Focus on your shoulders and back, which create the V-shape that makes a frame look broader and more upright. Getting leaner also helps, since it improves proportions and makes your face and neck look more defined. A good haircut with a bit of height on top adds a small visual boost too. Limb-lengthening surgery
There is one way to make an adult's bones longer: limb-lengthening surgery. A surgeon cuts the femur or tibia, inserts a device, and gradually pulls the bone apart over months so new bone fills the gap. It was developed to treat conditions like leg length differences and bone deformities, and some clinics now offer it for cosmetic height.
This is not a looksmaxxing hack. It is a major orthopedic procedure with months of recovery and physical therapy, and costs that commonly run from tens of thousands to well over a hundred thousand dollars in the US. Possible complications include infection, nerve and blood vessel damage, joint stiffness, bones that heal poorly or not at all, blood clots and long-term pain. If you are seriously considering it, talk to qualified orthopedic surgeons, get multiple opinions, and treat it as the serious medical decision it is.
Height in photos and dating
Height comes up a lot in dating apps, and it is easy to obsess over a single number on a profile. In reality, how you come across in your photos matters much more. Full-body shots taken from chest height or slightly lower, good posture and well-fitting clothes all help. Goatmaxx scores your photos and tells you which ones present you best, which is a more useful thing to optimize than an inch you cannot change. Our guide to the best dating app photos covers angles and shot types.
Common questions
Can you grow taller after 21?
For most men, no. Growth plates have usually closed by the early twenties, after which bones cannot get longer. You can still look taller through posture, shoes, clothing and building a stronger frame.
Does hanging from a bar make you taller?
Not permanently. Hanging can decompress your spine briefly and may help posture, but it does not lengthen bones. Any measured gain disappears as your spine settles back.
Do height increase pills work?
There is no good evidence that height supplements make adults taller, and they cannot reopen closed growth plates. Talk to a doctor before taking any supplement or hormone, especially anything sold online for height.
How can I tell if my growth plates are closed?
The only reliable way is an X-ray, usually of the hand and wrist, ordered by a doctor. If you have not grown at all in a year or more, that is a strong sign you have reached your adult height.
